Introducing IoT Smoke Alarm

After couple months of silence we have re-engineered the smoke alarm to fit into the Sensos Platform. Basically, the smoke alarm allows to test the platform’s usability and performance. And now when the omni-presence is in everybody’s lips, we wanted to go mobile as well.

Along with the traditional smoke detector we equipped the smoke alarm with a movement sensor, giving a variety of opportunities to build interesting home security applications. We wanted to take the smoke detector into a mobile phone, allowing the user to check the status of his kitchen, receive notifications, and analyse the movement in his home. Below you can grasp how the mobile endpoint looks like.

As you can see, the smoke alarm can be reached everywhere and the data can be consumed any time. Push messages are essential to inform the user about critical situations, representing a voice of the device that communicates with the user. Benefits of having IoT Smoke Alarm are evident: Whereas traditional alarm is always connected to its physical presence, the IoT Smoke Alarm allows us to monitor the device either through browser or mobile endpoint. From our perspective the preferred usage approach is to have a mobile phone as a main endpoint since the rendered context is quite simple. It’s interesting to see what other type insights we could extract from the smoke and the movement than represented above.

Currently we are going to test the Sensos Platform with one hundred smoke alarms. It’s not only interesting to see what type of information a single device can produce, but it is also interesting what sort of information is generated when these devices are orchestrating together in a Sensos-ecosystem. Definitely interesting subject to tell about in the future.
